Only 87 days remain in Nebraska’s “long” legislative session. Seventeen perky Freshmen senators swore to defend the constitutions of the United States and Nebraska. Then, the experienced Republicans directed a coup to elect Republicans to every meaningful leadership position in the building.
Congrats to Speaker Jim Scheer (Norfolk).
What’s the big deal this session? Projected revenue is short $276M for this budget year, ending June 30. On top of that, the shortfall for the next biennium is $880M-ish.
More rumors….look for maneuvering next week to reduce the number of votes required to cease a filibuster from 33 to 30. That would make it easier for the majority of senators supporting a bill to move past the noise. And, Senator Chambers has been accused of not actually living in his district. Expulsion proceedings?

THE WEEK THAT WAS
The Remote Seller Sales Tax Collection Act requires Internet sellers to collect and remit state and local sales taxes to Nebraska, even if they do not have a physical presence in the state. Is it enforceable? Perhaps.
The bill would become law immediately upon signature of the Governor.
