Creating Solutions Together

The Nebraska Legislature’s Agriculture Committee met in executive session yesterday afternoon. Upon adjournment, Chairman Jerry Johnson (Wahoo) announced that Senator John Kuehn’s “Right to Farm and Ranch” bill (LR378CA) would not advance out of committee this session.

The Nebraska Agri-Business Association introduced our letter at the bill’s public hearing, supporting the concept of LR378CA. Opposition testimony came from members of the Humane Society of the United States; Farmers Union and Bold Nebraska.

Senator Johnson and others on the committee believe the issue deserves to be more thoroughly studied. That process will take place throughout the summer and fall, and NeABA will continue to be fully engaged.

Sincerely,

As state senators are allowed to do, sometimes they change their minds. Such is the case with LR378CA, the “Right to Farm and Ranch” bill. Yesterday, introducer, Senator Kuehn, could only muster two votes to advance his bill out of the Agriculture Committee. After reconsideration by the Committee, today the bill received five votes (Senators Bloomfield, Kolterman, Schilz, Riepe and Larson) to move the bill to General File, precisely the number needed. Senators Harr and Chambers voted no, and Chairman Jerry Johnson abstained, stating the issue deserves more work before advancing further.

The Nebraska Agri-Business Association introduced our letter at the bill’s public hearing, supporting the concept of LR378CA. Opposition testimony came from members of the Humane Society of the United States; Farmers Union and Bold Nebraska.
